2025 Day 3 - 13th Colony Distillery Southern Straight Bourbon Whiskey

Today’s offering comes from the oldest operating Distillery in Georgia. 13th Colony began in 2009. They are small and average about 80 barrels per batch.

We are tasting their Flagship bourbon. The mash bill is made up of 70% corn, 21% rye and 9% malted barley and the bottle is 95 proof.

The nose is sweet corn with candied cherries. I also got some oak and leather. The pallet starts with a pop of oak, more corn and apricots. The finish is lingering with a nut type tannin and spice.

This is a great sipper and, in my opinion, does not need any ice.

This is the entry level offer and for the price, deserves a place in your home.

I hope you enjoyed discovering this one as much as we did.

Back for night 3! First thing I noticed as the bottles emptied into our glasses was a great coloring, followed by a pleasant aroma. But first sip... both Rachel and I noted a very different kind of aftertaste following the brief introduction of heat. We could not quite tell what we were tasting but we both agreed something a bit more earthy/woody. Only then did we read the instructions description. Your mention of "nut type tannin and spice" summarizes this well. It's a nice sip and a great opportunity to try something from 13th Colony Distillery.

Years ago, I was way out on Michigan's Upper Peninsula in February. Snowing. Fkn COLD. Dark. I was there on business, which meant several giant warehouses filled with muscle cars, race cars, etc. Which also meant I couldn't ever get as warm as I wanted to. By the end of the first day, I needed a warm bar and a hot toddy. We stopped at a lone bar off a 2-laner passing for a highway in the dead of night, because it was the first bright light we came across in a few miles and, y'know, sometimes the best bar is the first bar you come across. We walked in, shaking off the cold like a Bob Seger song, and sat…

Had to take a phone pic of my yet-to-be-assembled hot toddy--thanks for attending my TED Talk.

An enticing whiff. Integrated flavors and silky mouthfeel. A very satisfying nip.

We both agreed this is a nice lighter bodied sipper. I agree with Paul that no ice is needed. I put a few drops of water into my first tiny pour and it didn’t benefit from it. I thought it would be a little hot at 95 but not the case. Smooth. White pepper. A winner.

Oh, so good! I can totally drink way too much of this- it's so easy to love! And the bottle is so cool, too.
