Day 9: Old Forester 1920
At 115 proof, this one rocks! It is definitely a sipping bourbon. It is rich in color and flavor.
The bottle is homage to the 1920’s and the prohibition, where Old Forrester was granted permits to bottle bourbon for “medicinal purposes”.
The nose is caramel, chocolate, cherries, and apple pie spices. The palate starts hot but is rich and nuanced.
I taste dried apricots, citrus fruit, malt, and maple syrup. The mouth feel is super rich, almost buttery. The finish is brown sugar, nuts, smoke, and cocoa.
This drinks great neat but is equally as pleasurable with a rock or two, or a few drops of water.
What a delight. Right off the nose, sweet caramel, smelling like a candy store. With water, the chocolate and cherries really start to pop. Such a smooth bourbon, I can't believe it is 115 proof. This one is bank!
Won’t repeat any of the above. The nose is brilliant, decadent. I had several enjoyable whiffs before a single sip. Beautiful deep color. Concur on aforementioned flavors but also a wonderfully integrated, long ass finish. The burn just serves as a reminder that there is plenty of flavor in small sips. Wow. Very enjoyable.
Ah, now we're going down the dark, dark path of a night with Stoner. The darker, the butterier, the proofier, the burnier, the betterer. Raquel even tried this one, after she saw how excited I was to tear into it: "I feel the warm in my chest--right here (points to heart). I think the hair is gonna start coming in..."
I ask you, is there a better endorsement of a great bourbon? I think not.
This whisky was a fun ride. I'm starting to take a liking to higher-proof bourbons. It was luxe, oaky, caramel on the nose. Cherry wood to taste, with slight cocoa and oaky, pepper-spray-napalm on the tongue. A second taste left me with a hint of Muppet Night Football and a strong stone fruit flavor I couldn't pinpoint. It reminded me, somewhat, of rumtopf.
This is a winner both of us love it! We had it at end of night as we almost forgot sorry that *might* be a factor in Alexis comment: “that is good shit!”. I concur with that oxymoron. Now back to Netflix’s “Sweet Home” which is some freakey-deakey Korean sci-fi horror - we are enjoying it!
