Day 8: David Nicholson Reserve
I am learning that I am a fan of Lux Row Distillers. This is not an expensive bottle. At 100 proof it drinks like a young bourbon, but is smooth.
The grains used in the production are corn, rye and barley, and you can definitely taste the rye.
I get toasted oak, baking spices with a faint floral vanilla note on the nose. The palate is what tells me there is a lot rye -- it’s a peppery burn on the tongue.
I also get cinnamon, raisins, and pecans. The pepper fades to a brown sugar and a honey sweet finish.
Not complex but makes a great sip, or even better served in a Manhattan!
Cheers.
I liked this one. It was a little whiny with the vapor but now that I know its 100 proof makes sense. On the nose I could smell something like a floral vanilla, even hints of banana. On the tongue, of course caramel and definitely roasted grains. With a bit of water, some kind of orange spice, molasses seemed to ooze out this smooth bourbon. Overall, it seemed kind of complex. I'd water this one down for sure.
I probably should have taken your advice and mixed a Manhattan with the David Nicholson. Instead I sat on the terrace on this rare cold clear SF night to try and capture both the whiskey and the widely anticipated conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn. I sort of got the pic I wanted although both the photo and tasting of the whiskey lacked focus.
Let's just say I welcome the warmth of the whiskey as I was heading back inside.
