Day 12: Joseph Magnus Bourbon I chose this bottle as I believe it sums up everything I have learned about American whiskey. This is a well-crafted bourbon.
The nose is chocolate and cherries right in front, followed by caramel, brown sugar, and mulled wine.
The pallet is thick and heavy. Chocolate is forefront, followed by dark cherry, from the nose and orange.
The sherry and cognac cask give it a deep and rich dried fruit, almost port finish.
This does not benefit from water, so keep it neat. You will not regret owning this bottle.
I hope you enjoy.
Raquel: "I smell all the stuff Paul says." I agree with the rest of my hand-fasted bourbon brethren: I've been really enjoying every moment of this and the labor of love that was put into such an amazing Xmas gift just makes it that much more amazing. Can I say 'amazing' one more time? Anyway, it's Christmas Evening and I'm just catching up to you guys. Raquel always makes a quesadilla this time of year and I'm eating a piece of it while I'm sipping this. Now, a note about Salvadoran quesadilla: it's a cakey, pastry thing of wonder, made of crema from El Salvador and some other Central American witchcraft I'm not allowed to know about. It's not the…
Christmas Eve and I am feeling a little wistful about the impending conclusion of our Bourbon journey.
Sigrid won't drink it as she really does not like whiskey, but she's enjoying comparing nose notes with Paul:
"Smooth, rich, luxurious nose. hints of blackberry, caramel, hot buttered rum, and brown sugar."
As for me, after reviewing the suggestions to savor the Joseph Magnus neat, I was reminded of a recipe for eggnog I recently saw on social media...
"First, pour 2 oz of good bourbon in a glass. Swirl it and hold the glass up. Think about eggnog, then drink the bourbon."
This struck me as a classic bourbon. Oak and caramel on the nose. First taste was a nice hard caramel-toffee with a solid burn. In between sips, I noticed a slight burnt caramel on my tongue, which I enjoyed. Successive tastes were quintessential bourbon cherry, cherry cordial or dried fruit as you mentioned above and liquid caramel. This one is for savoring.
